Hunt tests and Working Certificate (WC) events allow Labradors to demonstrate their natural retrieving abilities and hunting instincts. These events test the skills that Labradors were originally bred for.
AKC Hunt Tests evaluate a dog's ability to retrieve game birds in a hunting scenario. Tests are divided into levels: Junior Hunter (JH), Senior Hunter (SH), and Master Hunter (MH), with each level presenting increasing challenges.
The entry level for hunt tests, Junior Hunter tests basic retrieving skills:
• Four single retrieves - two on land, two on water
• Birds may be shot or dead
• Dog must deliver to hand
• Basic steadiness required
• No handling allowed
Intermediate level that tests more advanced skills:
• Multiple retrieves including doubles
• Both land and water work
• Handling allowed and encouraged
• Greater steadiness requirements
• Honor (steady while another dog works)
The most challenging level for experienced dogs:
• Complex multiple retrieves
• Advanced handling required
• Difficult terrain and conditions
• Strong steadiness and control
• Tests hunting intelligence and trainability
The Working Certificate is an excellent starting point for dogs new to hunting activities. It tests basic retrieving skills on both land and water, demonstrating that a dog possesses the fundamental abilities of a retriever.
WC requirements include:
• Two single retrieves - one on land, one on water
• Dead birds only
• Basic steadiness
• Natural retrieving ability
• Delivery to within a reasonable distance of handler
A more advanced version of the Working Certificate that includes:
• Four retrieves - two on land, two on water
• Includes one double retrieve
• Shot birds may be used
• More challenging terrain
• Honor required

Florida offers excellent opportunities for hunt test training and actual hunting, including waterfowl hunting in various state management areas. Many of our members actively hunt with their dogs and can provide guidance on hunting opportunities throughout the state.
Interested in hunt tests? Start by attending a test as a spectator to see what's involved. Many of our members are happy to let newcomers observe training sessions and ask questions. Most Labradors have natural retrieving instincts that can be developed with proper training.
